Summary
"The Special" took me by surprise as I had expected it to be of a lower standard, similar to the director's previous film. However, I was proven wrong. This movie exceeded my expectations and turned out to be quite good, sticking to a very traditional approach. It's a nostalgic nod to classic horror films that have been somewhat forgotten lately. The film's setup is straightforward, leading to a simple yet satisfying payoff, keeping the audience engaged throughout. Although marketed as a body horror movie, "The Special" doesn't fully embrace the body horror genre. Instead, it revolves around a storyline that builds anticipation for something grotesque, but it focuses more on delivering a compelling narrative and well-developed characters. Towards the end, there's a subtle touch of body horror, enhancing the overall experience. While some practical effects might appear slightly artificial, they still manage to impress. The movie carries a strong message, and its daring script sets it apart. Watching "The Special" makes one believe that its director, Harrison Smith, is destined for greatness in the filmmaking world. I am thoroughly impressed with the strides he has made, and I eagerly look forward to his future projects.
