Summary
The film commences with a hushed murmur, gentle Spanish words caressing the air. Soon, the focus shifts to a woman's face, captured in an intimate close-up. She is immersed in prayer. Gradually, the camera draws back, revealing walls and other individuals, all connected in a circle of prayer, holding hands. The whispering grows in intensity. This captivating opening sets the stage for an exceptional cinematic journey. From this very scene, I was enthralled, and my captivation continued throughout the entire movie. The film boasts numerous other remarkable moments, each delicately crafted and brimming with intensity. "La llorona," rooted in historical events, portrays the final chapter in the life of an aging military dictator in Guatemala. Found guilty of cruelty towards the indigenous Maya population, he faces charges of genocide, only to be later acquitted. The story unfolds within the confines of his grand mansion, perpetually surrounded by an enraged mob demanding justice for their missing family members. The dictator's wife, daughter, and granddaughter also reside in the house. The arrival of a young, beautiful, and mysterious Maya girl as a servant triggers a series of peculiar events.
